ex-ex-gay “former leaders” release more public “apologies”

A new phenomenon is growing among ex-ex-gays (backsliders in biblical terminology). That is to publicly apologize for telling homosexuals they can be saved and delivered from sin through Jesus Christ. Part of the strategy being employed with these public apologies is repetitive use of a de facto standard (I was wrong, therefore all are wrong) sans any proof or attribution to any authoritative biblical sources.

Exgaywatch, which serves as an unofficial mouthpeice for these groups, posted today via Soulforce and others that “three more” ex-ex-gays from Australia released public apologies for their part in helping homosexual strugglers find freedom in Christ.

The public apology phenomenon began with the Peterson Toscano’s Beyond ExGay (BEG) conference in Irvine, CA last month where former participants in exgay ministries publicly “apologized” for their part in allegedly leading people astray. Those who had failed to emerge from their ministry involvement as “heterosexual” issued statements condemning such ministry as misguided and dangerous.

We do agree with these individuals that becoming a “heterosexual” isn’t a goal of Christianity. It never has been, nor will it ever be. There are millions of heterosexuals who are sinners outside of relationship with God. The goal is holiness, based on Leviticus 19:2 and 1 Peter 1:15-17.  Holiness is the lifestyle gold standard instituted by God for His people. Holiness incorporates sexual holiness, wholeness and purity from which unrepentant homosexuality is explicity excluded.  2 Thessalonians 4:7 For God has not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

If any Exodus ministries have been telling people they can “become straight”, they are wrong and should immediately revamp their Living Waters programs and retrain their facilitators. However, neither BEG or its supporters have produced any tangible evidence  proving people are being told (or promised) they can “become straight.” Therefore, we are skeptical that this is the norm as opposed to infrequent occurences.

That someone would recant and ultimately reject a solid biblical truth is perhaps more evidence of the growing strain of acceptable heresy among so-called gay christians. God’s truth –no matter who fails to live by it– remains as is. The promise of freedom from the curse and penalty of all sin is permanently embedded into the purpose of Christ’s first advent, earthly ministry, suffering, death, burial, resurrection, ascension and ultimately His return.

Ex-ex-gays who apologize for speaking the God’s truth are in grave error. What’s more, in their curent state,  they are unfit to serve Christ.  Luke 9: 62  And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.  Those who begin with the work of God, must resolve to go on, or they will fall away. Looking back, leads to drawing back, and drawing back to perdition.

  1. You are correct when you say it is about Holiness, and maybe that is why these “Ex-Ex-Gays” Failed, because they went into it with the idea of being Heterosexual. When you understand that Homosexuality is like any other sin, that tries to keep you from God, than you understand it’s about Holiness. Believing that just because you have same sex attractions that you have to act out on them, is absurd, in time through the power of Jesus Christ, your life can change, but running back to your former lifestyle, and calling leaving the Homosexual lifestyle a sham, is irresponsible of the facts especially when you consider other people have been successful, and continue to be, when really it’s in you that holds the question of how much do you want to be Holy for God, in these cases I imagine the desire did not go that deep.

I pray that they see the error in their ways, and see that God’s way is much better than our ways.

  2. You will find further explanations about what is happening down under on my blog…..along with statements from others.

I think its not about error…..its about finally being totally honest which has to be said has not always been the case with the exgay ministries.

  3. Mr. Brown there were sufficient links in the post for readers to know what’s happening. Its astonishing that you could so easily dismiss truth and substitute your own error as being “totally honest”. The only thing you are being honest about is that you have chosen to openly live in sin.

I can’t see how God can be pleased with that no matter how much blame you want to heap on “exgay ministries”.

But then again maybe your objective is not to please God, but your own desires.

  4. Many of those claiming to be “ex ex gay” have simply embraced a false identity and accepted there relapse as a genuine expression of self.

To them sexual feelings justify behavior and
in turn behavior becomes accepetd as an idenity.

That is why they are so obsessed with there sexuality and trying to defend it.Such people hate and despise Orthodox religion because it reminds them of there sin and wayward lives.

They have two choices one is to conquer it as they have done with the Episcopalin Church or define it as dangerous. They fear people like me “former lesbians” because we represent all that they hate.

I would however suggest that ex gay groups have a relapse support group within its ministry or
a seperate ministry that focuses on those who do relapse while struggling with SSA but with out much success.

It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure,to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.

  5. A new phenomenon is growing among ex-ex-gays (backsliders in biblical terminology). That is to publicly apologize for telling homosexuals they can be saved and delivered from sin through Jesus Christ.

    Our Lord said:
Mark 3:28-30 (New King James Version)
    28) “Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter;

    29) but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation”—

    30) because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

  6. Reading the statement from Darlene Bogle, you see someone who was tempted and decided the redemption of Christ is not real once they felt temptation. She twisted the truth of Christ to fulfill her own lusts continually.

Not to mention, she should not have been put in the post of church leadership to begin with, but then again, 4Square is the same bunch that kept Clarence McClendon till his divorce. They should have removed McClendon for his bad doctrine before his divorce and should have never violated Titus 1 by putting up not just men of bad doctrine, but also women, in violation of scripture.

  7. “Reading the statement from Darlene Bogle, you see someone who was tempted and decided the redemption of Christ is not real once they felt temptation. She twisted the truth of Christ to fulfill her own lusts continually.”

Yes and I wonder if Darlene Bogle, Michael Bussee, Micheal Venn-Brown and the rest of these ex-ex-gay folks were ever saved to begin with. Was there true repentance (metanoia) from their sin or were they just winging it on their own willpower which will eventually runout of steam and crash. True repentance, or godly sorrow, is characterized by a hatred for the specific sin you have committed, and you turn from that sin. If there is no hatred for that specific sin you have committed, and you are not turning from that sin, you are not repenting biblically. And then to go back, pick it up up, embrace it and justify it is like a dog returning to its vomit. Basically there is a huge difference spiritually between attrition and contrition.

These “apologies” are missing something very important: namely if they were indeed lying and deceiving people about change, why wasn’t God given the very first public apology especially since they were allegedly lying in His name?

  8. …I wonder if … these ex-ex-gay folks were ever saved to begin with.

The answer is NO. The Lord allowed us to see they were not truly called to Him.
1 John 2:18-19 (New King James Version)

    18) Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.

    19) They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

Praise the Lord for the false brethren being exposed.

  9. >> …I wonder if … these ex-ex-gay folks were ever saved to begin with.
    >
    >The answer is NO. The Lord allowed us to see they were not truly called to Him.
    >1 John 2:18-19 (New King James Version)

I’ll continue to pray that they come around. There is still time for them to learn the error of their ways and truly repent.

  10. “A new phenomenon is growing among ex-ex-gays (backsliders in biblical terminology).”

Anyone who identifies as “ex-ex-gay” is a “backslider?” In what respect? What if an ex-ex-gay is abstinent/celibate? What “sin” have they gone back to? I don’t think you can equate the “ex ex gay” label with “backsliding.” Backsliding is a very individual thing, and in many cases, you have individuals who weren’t sexually active either BEFORE or AFTER the ex-gay experience so you’re being awfully presumptuous in assuming that re-affirming your gay identity equates to “returning to sexual sin.” But that is the problem with the whole anti-gay camp, the presumption is that ID’ing with the orientation also means indulging in certain behaviors…. hmm…..

“….That is to publicly apologize for telling homosexuals they can be saved and delivered from sin through Jesus Christ.”

You know that’s not what they were apologizing for, so here I assume you’re just being plain sarcastic.

“…when really it’s in you that holds the question of how much do you want to be Holy for God, in these cases I imagine the desire did not go that deep.”

From what I understand, Peterson Toscano was in ex-gay therapy for almost 20 years before he gave up and realized it wasn’t working. So his desire was not “Deep enough?” How much longer did he need to demonstrate his desire…. 30 years? 50 years? What happened to “faith like a mustard seed?” What happened to “my yoke is easy and my burden is light?”

“They fear people like me “former lesbians” because we represent all that they hate. ”

Oh Sarah. I don’t know anyone who fears people like you. If they were convinced you were genuniely changed they would probably say “Good for you.” If they weren’t convinced, they would probably just pity you for living a lie.

  11. Mr Feaster lets assume you are a Christian.

What, pray tell, is your biblical justification for returning to something you previously believed to be wrong?

Secondly, what is the biblical definition of a backslider? Please cite scripture in your response.
