Flunder accuses church of “withholding” grace

Can people actually “withhold” the grace of God? Is God so powerless that people can commandeer his grace and then refuse it to other people?

One cannot help but ask these questions as you listen to the strange claims of Bishop Yvette Flunder, the lesbian bishop of San Francisco.

On a parallel plain, withholding grace would be the same as claiming the church can withhold salvation, or the Holy Spirit. The church has been given a lot of authority in the earth by Christ, but there is nothing in scripture that says it has the authority —or the ability— to withhold grace.
Granted the church should demonstrate the graciousness of God, but IF that demonstration were indeed withheld, an individual is not at the mercy of the church. Grace needs no mediator. Then too, one cannot demand grace the reacher and despise grace the teacher.
Flunder, like many of the gay christian movement, seek to make the fight about homosexuality a fight with the church. But it is God who established the truth and standards about sexual behavior, not the church. Its like fighting with the police because you don’t like stop signs. Of course, they would never admit that they are fighting against God, but instead have crafted a red herring religion.

Flunder’s speech to the black gay church conference in Atlanta (2006) begins at 5:41 on the video. The conference was held at Timothy McDonald’s First Iconium Baptist Church on Moreland Ave.
Here are some the more stranger remarks coming out of her mouth:
1. Its the church’s fault that homosexuals cannot answer God’s call. Its like being pregnant and not being able to give birth, she says.
2. Homosexuals have cried and prayed for God to take it [their homosexuality] away, but a look in the mirror the next morning proves that he hasn’t.
3. Religious gays are “prophetic” martyrs
4.You have to pretend to be straight to survive in the church

What any of this has to do with grace is a mystery. Grace, the bible teaches, is freely given from God to everyone. Because it is so freely given we are strongly cautioned not to take it for granted and continue sinning. Romans 6:1. In fact, God himself forbids that we do it.

The real motivation for Bishop Flunder’s speech isnt to somehow open the floodgates of grace to homosexuals in her movement, but to broker a seat at the table. Such motives however are clearly foreign to a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Although there is no possibility that grace can be withheld by people from people, the Bible is clear that truth can and is withheld by people from people.

For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness, because that which may be known of God is manifest in them, for God hath shown it unto them. Romans 1:18,19

The appropriation of God’s grace is not a function of the church and has never been, but to keep her selfish agenda alive, Bishop Yvette Flunder suppresses that truth to her followers.

  1. Look at the sign on the cloth on the pulpit the crown and the cross. It is a Knights Templar symbol and Sharpton is in Prince Hall freemasonry. That tells me that freemasonry is mixed up in this gay acceptance movement.

Have you watched Secret Mysteries of America’s Beginning? It is excellent showing you the origins of christian identity and the British Israelism side of christianity.

  2. Whats this church witholding grace nonsense? Am I missing something here?

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

None of us have control over grace, first she wrongly calls herself Bishop and second she wrongly divides the word of truth.

“Feed the flock, not on the flock.”

  3. Nigel this might be a case of supply and demand.

The itching ear syndrome if you will.

At the same time for Flunder to pull a lie like that out of thin air and publicly air it is a reflection of the darkness in her soul. Its definitely not the light of Christ.

I hadnt heard that before about “feeding on the flock” but how appropriate for some of the false prophets and wolves in sheep’s clothing.

  4. Let me say initially that I do not by any means support Yvette Flunders position.

Technically, the church cannot withhold the grace of GOD in a literal sense; though we are the ministers of grace to the world. Sometimes the way the church acts does not announce the grace of GOD which is the church’s ministry: 2 Corinthians 5:18….”he has committed unto us the ministry of reconciliation:to wit: GOD was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself..not imputing their sins against them…” The unredeemed understand the grace of GOD through the church. Yes we are indeed saved by grace via faith not of works but the means of that grace being available is throught he preaching of the cross to them that perish. That is the church’s mission. There may be a modicum (and I do mean a modicum ) of truth in what Ms. Flunder said about the church withholding grace. Didn’t the church do that in their perverted teaching that assigned blacks to a lesser staus in the church by virtue of their skin color? She perverts the truth for her own purpose but she is near the truth. That makes the best deception.

  5. Elder Jimmy I agree. If not an outright lie, her statement is heavily nuanced to further support a victimization ideology.

As you said, technically the church cannot withhold –the grace of God. But what she is doing (like those who taught blacks were lesser because of skin color) is suppressing the truth and that is damaging and dangerous.

  6. Job, thats a big claim. If they cant back it up with scripture, then its just a claim. I dont think anybody has anything to be worried about. LOL

  7. I agree with Bishop Flunder and Elder Jimmy. The church teaches and therefore believes that they have the ability to proclaim and distribute God’s grace by virtue of their own authority. They tell people that are not saved, abomination, unclean, etc. That ability, right or authority was never given to the church. Exclusion of any kind is the real abomination. “When you’ve done this unto the least of these my brothers and sisters your doing this unto me.” Please continue to do this Jesus – I dare you.
