Candy coated, sugar water "gospel"

Camp On This has an awesome read of how the contemporary, postmodern church dudes, cool chicks and pulpit pimpeteers have double coated the gospel with earthly sweetness. In the process, they have reduced God to a “powerless lover down on one knee”, begging people to accept him. I get giddy with spiritual excitement when I hear pure preaching with no hidden agenda to manipulate the hearer for money or…something else. But its becoming harder and harder to find that type of preacher or preaching. The masses will most likely label such a person as an extremist.

This is what gives so much power to the illicit religions and false movements that thrive on the partial preaching of the gospel. That’s the “love of Jesus is a many splendored thing” crowd.

We should recommit ourselves to preaching the whole counsel of God with power and in love. Its 100% sure to offend some. But its also sure to convict and draw others into repentance and a right relationship with God. I love what the cross stands for, but much more I love who died on that cross. Roman jurisprudence selected crucifixion by cross to symbolize the most cruel, horrific and degrading way for a man to be punished. Stoning was for common criminals. Yet, Jesus endured the scourge of the cross for you and I. It is high blasphemy for any so-named Christian to diminish his death in any way so as not to offend those in sin. How utterly dispicable.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:2-3 NIV

  1. “the contemporary, postmodern church dudes, cool chicks and pulpit pimpeteers have double coated the gospel with earthly sweetness. In the process, they have reduced God to a “powerless lover down on one knee”, begging people to accept him.”

Yep. It is like they never read the book of Acts. It has 13 presentations of the Gospel and love is never mentioned once. Of course, God’s love is evident throughout the Bible, but when the early church shared the Gospel it appeared to be based on the evidence of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and our need to repent and believe.

Acts 17:30-31 “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.”

  2. ………………….We see people in droves follow the likes of Todd Bentley, Creflo Dollar, Joel Osteen, TD Jakes, Joyce Meyer, Benny Hinn, Paul Crouch, Paula White, and all the others that offer a powerless, man driven, sugar coated Gospel which satisfies the flesh of man.

It should be no surprise that the Sheeple not only defend these people but actually rise these people to the level of idol status.

Like Pastor Foster said, “We should recommit ourselves to preaching the whole counsel of God with power and in love. Its 100% sure to offend some.”

Yes Pastor Foster it is the Rock of Offense. Unfortunately the people who lap up this sugar coated Gospel accuse us of being “haters” if you will. In reality the Offensiveness of the Rock is why these people get mad at us.

  3. Although greed is a big reason for this “sugar diet”, it’s not the only reason. We’re going through the book of Galatians at a home bible study. Paul said “the reason people pervert the gospel is so that they can avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ.”

It’s a shame (and a crime shame, might I add) that we’re afraid to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth so that people won’t send us a nasty email or say we’re haters or not talk to us anymore. We’re not even being persecuted like the early church was (but it’s on it’s way), and all we’re really afraid of are comments from stepping on toes.

I guess since they are avoiding persecution, their mindset is that they should get paid and be in good graces with everyone also.

  4. People are afraid to speak the truth. We need to speak the truth in LOVE which doesn’t include name calling or belittling someone because of an attraction which they did not choose.
