Lawsuit finds church “discriminated” against lesbian couple

This is no surprise. Some silly churches and their leaders still think homosexual activists don’t want to bother them. They just want “civil marriage” rights. Sure.

The New Jersey Division on Civil Rights ruled Monday that a church group discriminated against a lesbian couple when it denied them the right to hold their civil union ceremony on beachfront property the group owns but has advanced as a public space.

The division found that Harriet Bernstein and Luisa Paster had probable cause to claim that the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association’s rejection of their bid to rent the boardwalk violates the state’s antidiscrimination law. According to a press release from the LGBT civil rights organization Garden State Equality, the opinion was based on the boardwalk pavilion’s being “public” by nature of its historic use as open to everyone without restrictions. For years, the Camp Meeting Association had applied for and received state tax breaks under New Jersey’s “Green Acres” program, which requires facilities to be open and nondiscriminatory to all. In September 2007 the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection ended the association’s tax breaks for the boardwalk area based on the group’s ban on civil unions.

“What this case has always been about from my clients’ perspective has been equality,” Larry Lustberg, the couple’s lawyer, told the Associated Press. Lustberg said they are seeking an order that would require the boardwalk to be equally accessible to everyone.

Alliance Defense Fund attorney Brian Raum, who represents the Camp Meeting Association, said his client would attempt to continue blocking civil union ceremonies on the property.

“Our position is the same,” he told the AP. “A Christian organization has a constitutional right to use their facilities in a way that is consistent with their beliefs.”

So now if atheists, polygamists and wiccans want to get married on the church’s property all they have to do is claim discrimination based on this precedent. Get ready, homosexual marriages are coming to a church near you, whether you want it or not.

  1. The craziest thing is this is happening so often, I’d be more surprised if the church won the lawsuite.

What part of “open and nondiscriminatory to all” don’t you understand. It’s very simple…if the church really wants to discriminate against anyone, then stop taking the states money.

I agree. If it takes refusing the state’s money to stop homosexuals from getting married on the church’s property, Im for it 100%. And it looks like since 2007 they havent been receiving state money.

  4. I have been following, and talking about this case for months.
Ocean Grove has already lost its 501c3, and with this ruling is now subject to the inevitable civil suit. I believe that this is a test case, and the start of a trend. Churches in CT, NJ, and MA are going to have an interesting time in the months ahead.

  5. Pastor Foster,
I hope this does not come across as a stupid question. How are synagogues and mosques registered with the IRS, as 501C3, non-profits, and religious organizations, incorporated? Side note, I heard a Christian minister specificially say he set up his ministry to be like a synagogue with the IRS…I cannot remember the exact wording…because the minister had the foresight to know that 501C3 was going to cause problems for churches/ministries down the road.

The reason, I ask this question…the GCM is not going after synagogues and mosques to demand “gay marriage” like they are with the church. That’s just my discernment and perspective on this, in reality, “gay marriage” is a DIRECT ASSAULT and INSULT to the LORD JESUS CHRIST. If anything is more anti-Christ than “gay marriage”, then we will be in the tribulation!

Happy New Year by the way.

  6. Thats a very good question EW and keen observation. I dont have the answer to that but I promise to look into it.

Although I tend to agree with you. Specifically on the muslims. The homosexuals wouldnt DARE attack the muslims! They know the muslims would firebomb and hunt them down. Yet they accuse Christians of being hateful and bigoted.

  7. This kind of judgment is the logical conclusion of turning sexual preferences into civil rights. It makes the state the enemy of the church.

  8. This issue has certainly heated up with the elections last year. It seems that several themed threads are coinciding with FOCA legislation, gay marriage and Obama on the horizon. It’s going to be an interesting year.

  9. It’s not suprising how this case is swept under the rug, by the media. CNN surely hasn’t reported this story, every Christian needs to know that their beliefs are at risk. Why should they be forced to lease services to homosexuals; what if they denied devil worshipers?
