Bible abuse alert! UMC pastor calls homosexuality “clean”

united_methodist_churchLike the racists of the jim crow era who falsely claimed the bible supported slavery and subjugation of black people, a United Methodist pastor in Dallas says God has made homosexuality “clean”.

According to a story in the Dallas Morning News, Rev. Diana Holbert told her diverse East Dallas congregation that homosexuality is not a big issue in the Bible and that Christians should be more focused on subjects such as health care, greed in the corporate world, and the welfare of children.

Before the sermon, Holbert told listeners that she only wanted to hear from them if they had a positive response to her message. She couldnt bear any “negativity.”

She based her sermon [pdf] on Acts 10:9-28, 34-48. “‘What God has made clean, you must not call profane,’ ” Holbert said.

So does Holbert’s revisioning of Acts 10 lend itself to even the slightest sound teaching? Of course not.

Like the slave masters before her, Holbert uses a sleight of mouth to arrive at her conclusion that God made homosexuality clean. False teachers in the gay christian movement shamelessly employ a form of allegorical perspective which allows an individual the unrestricted freedom to remove real or apparent contradictions between Scriptures and current beliefs. This is how they neuter parts of the Bible that stand in the way of their cleverly crafted, but false beliefs. Practitioners of this roguish form of interpretation replace clear scriptural truth and revelation with whatever cultural context fits their presupposed ideology.

Using allegorical liberties, Holbert repositions Cornelius the centurion alongside gays creating a false parallel between the two based on the broadest commonality possible.

God often moves beyond our boundaries, guiding us to accept and to include those on the margins. We see Jesus doing that over and over with the company he kept, especially as he shared a meal, caught in the act of radical hospitality with the discards of society.
God doesn’t discard or discriminate. “The Holy Spirit is no respecter of persons,” I often heard at Hamilton Park. “If you’re not careful, the Holy Spirit might just jump on you!” It’s a scary thing, this Holy Spirit that interrupts. Scary until you realize that the Spirit is motivated 100% by love, sent by a trustworthy God to a people who think they have all the answers. I like the interruptions of this Spirit that draws us in its tether.

I wont go into how she mischaracterizes the Holy Spirit. But the only observable commonalities between Cornelius and gays are that they are human. Being human has no inherent qualifications of holiness. Respect, yes. Holiness, no. What’s more Cornelius wasn’t committing sexual immorality as a gentile, the bias against him was only because he was a gentile. Race and gender are immutable human characteristics. Sexual conduct isnt. One can change from heterosexual to homosexual and vice versa or engage in no sexual activity at all simply by choice. Thus, the comparison between Cornelius and homosexuals is a patently false one. We explained the Apostles’ restrictions to the gentiles in this post Are gay christians the new gentiles?

Holbert peppers her faux sermon with tired cultural arguments intended to divert attention from the fact that she’s doing a shell game with the scriptures in front of her. Such arguments do nothing but hype the emotional sensitivities of the listeners and keep them in “happy” in bondage.   And she has the nerve to call Dr. Jeffries “anti-scholastic.”

And what about the word itself getting caught in biblical interpretation? The word “homosexuality” never occurs once in either Testament. It would appear that this issue is a tempest in this teapot.

The chronological appearance of a word in our lexicon does not invalidate its meaning. If it did, the word gay would be invalid as well. The word gay, in association with same gender conduct, first appeared in contemporary lexicons in 1889 and was used by a male prostitute. In America, the consensus is that it was not used publicly in this context until the 1930s. What’s more the word “gay” does not appear in either biblical testament. So if we must invalidate use of the word homosexuality simply because it doesn’t occur in the bible, we must invalidate use of the word gay which also doesnt exist in scripture.

But don’t expect to hear this from Holbert or the other progay lemmings currently running around the church preaching about “love”. Their agenda is clear: dismantle God’s word no matter how low they have to stoop to do it.

    I have been following this blog for a LONG time, and continue to be blessed by your steadfastness, faithfulness, diligence and Love.

    I Pastor a house church, and also lead worship at a local UMC. (long story)
    I am watching the denomination move further and further away from Biblical truth by the day. . It is a subtle, measured, and planned deception Here is a sample of what I have seen/heard over the past years The names have been redacted:

    12/2005 – In a sermon, Pastor xxx declares that the miracle of the 2 fish and 5 loaves was not that the same fish and loaves fed thousands, unless as he puts it, it was two whales, and loaves made from an entire field of wheat. He states that the miracle was that by having the people sit in groups, Jesus created community, and the communities shared what they had. THAT he says, was the miracle.

    6/24/07 – Pastor xxx ‘s, sermon implies the approval/acceptance/condoning of homosexuality. Not only the person, but the lifestyle, and uses Acts 11 to couch the debate over homosexuality as equal to the circumcision debate.
    xxx says that the early church members would be surprised at the church’s ‘gentile’ predominance today, implying that in years to come homosexuality will be so much a part of the normal life of the church that we who are in opposition now will be surprised.

    The Sermon is preached on the same day as the gay parade (now called the Pride parade) an event that traditionally showcases public displays of some of the most obscene activity that human beings can engage in?

    Late 2007 – Pastor www (current Ass’t. Pastor) prays in the name of Father and Mother God, and says Jesus cursed the fig tree because his hunger made him irrational…

    1/13/08 – Pastor www says (among other things) that:
    1) Water Baptism is not necessary, that if one wants the experience, they can” take a shower and wet themselves any time.”
    2) Later on Pastor www makes a comment about: ”God’s Experiment with your life” More specifically, that your life is God’s great experiment.

    2/3/08 – Rev. ttt, preaching from Jeremiah 29 says that:
    We (the African Americans) are today’s Hebrew captives and the Western culture is Babylon (inference is that the white man is our captor). Though he references Louis Farrakhan and Bob Marley in his sermon, he does not mention Jesus once.

    2/10/08 – Pastor www says that: “The Lord moves in mischievous ways”. It is not a slip of the tongue, in that she reiterates it, and then says ‘mysterious ways’ as well.

    I was more than concerned about this because of the meaning of the word:

    Mischievous:
    1: harmful, injurious (mischievous gossip)

    2 a: able or tending to cause annoyance, trouble, or minor injury b: irresponsibly playful (mischievous behavior)

    So, are we making “The only wise God” equal to Loki (The Norse God of Mischief)? What happened to James 1:13?

    1/19/09 – During an MLK Day Commemerative service, a visiting UMC Pastor states that he is “the proud Pastor of a multi- racial, multi-generational, multi-sexual-orientation church”

    2/15/09 – Rev. bbb’s sermon:
    From the text (Mark 1:40-45), in his message makes the following assertions (not a complete list), all of which he confirmed later, when I confronted him on it:

    1) The man (the leper) did something that Jesus didn’t expect.

    2) In touching the man, Jesus in an act of ‘Holy Disobedience’ shatters the laws on being unclean, and the touch of Jesus returns the man to community.

    3) Jesus was struggling with his identity, and the leper ‘OUTED’ him

    4) In discussing ‘people on the margins’, he stated that Jesus started his ministry with people on the margins of society, and we are to do the same. The ‘margins’ that we deal with today are: gender, nationality, & sexual orientation.

    5) Cleanliness (acceptance) happens not by doctrine, social or religious laws, but by the touch of Jesus.

    6) In Jesus we are ‘free to be’. Meaning that there is no need to change

    As you can see, there is a plan afoot. It is not random or haphazard. The UMC as it exists today would cause John Wesley to weep….

  3. Add this one to the list of truth rebels – it is becoming increasingly difficult to play the fence on the homosexual matter (partly because of sites like this). I believe the distinctions will become clearer as churches are forced to take a side. May God be glorified.

  5. Regarding the trends toward liberalism in churches, I have had a number of experiences which I’d like to share. First, I am a pastor’s daughter. My pastor was called to preach as a Baptist minister the year I was born. My younger brother, his namesake, was also a pastor. Unfortunately, we lost him to pancreatic cancer on Dec. 23, 2007, a great loss for our family and the body of Christ.

    Once leaving my church home and moving to D.C. for college, I attended a church in the late 1970s. There were so many people in the choir who were obviously gay that I felt uncomfortable and couldn’t understand why this was tolerated. I later found out that the pastor was himself in the closet (I found out after I left the church).

    I moved to Houston in the early 80s and attended a large church here. Here, too, there were a lot of gay men in the choir and, again, I felt uncomfortable about this. I left that church after about 3 years, but years later, the pastor was sued by a male member for sexual harassment. The church (or pastor) settled the case, but it had been widely rumored for years that the pastor was gay. If homosexuality is widespread in a church, it has to be sanctioned from the top.

    The next church I attended briefly with my current husband, who was then my fiance. The pastor of that church made a pass at me, so I left immediately. The pastor knew my fiance and knew we were engaged. He himself had been married twice. I was appalled by his advances.

    As I mentioned on another blog, I then attended a megachurch for 13 years. It was the same church where the pastor gave CeCe Winans a Rolls Royce. In the beginning, things were really good as the church was growing. However, with all of the visions from the pastor and the constant unveiling of new projects that required millions of dollars, money became the focus. About six months out of the year, the sermons were devoted to money in some form. Also, the church was run like a dictatorship — no deacon board, no trustees — all of the power rested in the hands of the Pastor and the “first family” (wife and daughters). Getting a direct meeting with the pastor was impossible and the needs or desires of the church body were completely ignored. If anyone questioned anything, they were accused of being “a weapon formed” against the pastor. Since I am against dictatorships in all forms, I could no longer attend this church. I left there in March. I still have some very good friends there and the members are really good people. A number of others have left for the same reasons.

    I currently attend another church that is more community oriented, the pastor has some humility and the children’s ministry is a priority. I have a 13-year-old daughter and a teen ministry is very important to me. I have not yet joined this new church, but attend every Sunday. At this point, I have a wait and see posture and I need to see consistency in the church ministry before joining.

    I have chronicled my church experiences to let people know that it isn’t about the pastor or the church — your faith should be about Christ and God’s word. My faith has not been diminished one iota because I know that putting faith in man is fool hardy to begin with. Too many pastors seem to let their egos take control and lose sight of the people. As Rev. Foster states, he leads people to Jesus, not the church.

  6. I am shocked to read about this issue and what is going on with some churches in the US. I am blessed by this blog and regularly read and get encouraged by it. I live in Kenya and so far, the issue of homosexuality has not permeated our society and church, but I think it is just a matter of time. It is good to know that there are people making a stand and that God will always have a remnant. Throughout bible history, he always preserved those who called on to him out of a pure heart. My prayer on a daily basis is that with all these going on, he will find me faithful if he comes before I go to him and that i finish very very strong. We must pray and walk in discernment and not be in shock, Jesus talked about these things when he spoke of the last days. Be blessed and continue doing the good work.

  7. The really sad thing is that these people KNOW that homosexual behavior is wrong, in the same way they know murder or adultery is wrong. But they do everything possible to justify their actions before God and man. God doesn’t buy it, and neither does the majority of man!

  8. My Mom was active in the Methodist church. We I became saved, about six years ago, I began going to a Calvary chapel which does verse by verse bible study. I was on fire for the Lord.

    My Mom was leery of my church, she would say, do they take care of the elderly, do they help those in poverty?

    Not knowing a whole lot about the inner workings of my new church I told her…they are more focused on missions, on spreading the gospel and saving souls.

    Her church was more concerned about helping the needy. Which is noble, I admit but I believe saving souls while helping the needy is best. Her church taught that there were multiple ways to heaven which drove me nuts.

    We would argue about homosexuality. She would say, do you think you are better than a gay person? And I’d respond, of course not! We are all sinners, I can only boast about Christ, nothing I’ve done, I’m no better than anyone.

    I bought her tapes from my church to listen to, the book of Hebrews. She was very ill and bed ridden. She listened. She told me, you are right. Jesus is the only way to heaven. She saw the light.

    I can’t wait to see her again someday. She is a resident of heaven now.

    I guess cover your eyes and ears is the going thing now when cetain ones don’t want to be bothered with the truth. Unfortunately it must be catching on-LOL

    Anyway, I’ve noticed this kind of apostasy taking place in the UMC in their advertisements etc. Thank God for the minister above (Pastor CTJ) pointing out what he’s seen and is experiencing. I know some good pastors in the organization and I hope they all are not so inclusive that they can’t stand for truth…It seems that this is taking place across the board though.

    and yes – Jonah was literally in the belly of a fish – unless the plain text of scripture is offensive to you, which it usually is to folks worshipping idols.

    You said that the word gay was not used in the new or old testaments. Just had to bring this to your attention before someone claims they did use it in the Bible and attempt to distort what this verse is saying. LOL. I can only imagine what this person in gay clothing might look like in their minds. LOL.

  12. Oh, my LORD today!!! I cannot believe this, but then again, I can. Pastor Holbert and I, while she was a pastor @ Hamilton Park did not see eye to Bible on several things. During a Black History concert, she began to “call forth” the spirit of Harriet Tubman, and other deceased people,which set off bells, whistles, and red flags to me. I asked to meet with her and showed her passages of Scripture that spoke on calling forth spirits of deceased people, ie: Saul and the witch of Endor ( 1Samuel 28:8-25) She was very nice and listened intently, then proceeded to give me Proverbs 3:5-8. In essence she was saying I was leaning to my “own understanding”, but that what she was doing was not divination. I begged to differ then and still do now.

    GCMW: Wow, so she’s just rotten through and through. And thank you for that eyewitness report, so no one can say no one “knows her.” I think interaction with the dead may be something that is part of the gay christian spirituality. Look at what this DC pastor did.

  13. The pastor used the above-mentioned scriptures to condone homosexuality, completely ignoring Paul’s letter to the Romans, denouncing such gross immorality. Interestingly enough, the passage she quoted was the Lord’s way of revealing to Peter that it was time to spread the message of the Gospel, not only to the house of Judah, but to the then-gentile nations, that all God’s children might have the opportunity to hear the message and accept the saving message of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Clearly the pastor’s twisting of the message of Holy Writ was an example of “wresting” the scriptures.

  16. OMG!! Rev. Foster, I just read the article about the DC pastor, and it is frighteningly similar to what happened @ my church w/Rev. Holbert, all the way down to the African drums. You may be right about ancestral worship in the gay christian church. Beloved vessels of GOD, it is clearly time to study to show yourself approved, the WORD had better already be hidden in your hearts, as your adversary the devil is making himself known more boldly every day. Study, fight, and pray!!!

    I believe what you wrote about is systemic in some of these denoms and thus necessary to alert people. Giving your money to leaders who will turn around and use it to fight God’s word is an abomination.

    Its important to remember that God has faithful people standing strong in the midst of this developing madness.
    Please be encouraged and continue fighting the good fight of faith.

    That comment alone reveals her ignorance / disingenuousness.

    There are quite a few things wrong with her Acts 10 angle:

    The person with the revelation was Peter, one of Jesus’ inner circle and a key leader in the early church. It wasn’t made to you, me or someone like Ms. Coffman. That doesn’t mean God couldn’t reveal something important like this to us, just that it is highly unlikely.

    The visions were clear and emphatic. Peter was given the vision three times.

    Peter was inclined to reject the meaning of the vision, whereas these pro-gay theologians have views on human sexuality that are virtually indistinguishable from the prevailing culture and they are glad to accept this “new revelation.”

    There was external validation for Peter from the Roman centurion.

    This lesson showed up in the Bible, not outside it. I’m not saying miracles don’t happen outside the Bible. It is just that things appear in the Bible for a reason. God communicating that the ceremonial laws had been fulfilled was one of those “big deals.”

    This vision overturned a ceremonial law, not a moral law. There are zero examples in the Bible of God reversing his moral laws. In fact, the more Jesus talked the stricter the laws seemed to get, because He emphasized the spirit of the law and not just the letter (i.e., lust was akin to committing adultery, anger was akin to murder, etc.). The dietary laws never applied to Gentiles.

    The “God has changed his mind view” is primarily being “revealed” to theologically liberal Christians in the U.S. . . . the very ones who often deny his Word to begin with! So we can’t trust the accurate transmission of the original writings but we can trust their new revelations? Go figure.

    If God is revealing a change, why is it necessarily more liberal? Why couldn’t God make his laws more stringent?

    The Bible gives strong warnings not to add or take away from its teachings.

    FYI-there’s another scripture you can use accordingly (in case you encounter another situation similar to the one you mentioned): Deuteronomy 18:10-14 “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who conjures spells, a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord…You shall be blameless before the Lord your God…the Lord your God has not appointed such for you.”

  22. Thank you, ReRe, that Scripture is another clear indicator that what I saw was witchcraft.. This was so disturbing to me when it happened, but what disturbed me most is the fact that nobody other than me and my husband saw anything wrong with her calling forth deceased people. It makes me so disillusioned with church in general. I do not want to disassociate myself with like-minded believers, especally as the Day of CHRIST’s return is so close, but I am finding it very hard to continue to go to church nowadays.     You brought out two phenomenal aspects of this fallacy that demand repeating for emphasis:

    Homosexual theologians and their supporters conceal this truth from their followers. This willful lying to keep people in bondage to their sin will reap a heavy penalty from God. When you look at Jesus’ teachings, his teachings on morality were much stricter than even the OT ones because he added the intangible restrictions to it as well.

    The scripture specifically notes upfront that Cornelius was “devout and God-fearing” which meant he didnt violate moral/sexual laws, even if he had not been made righteous by faith in Christ. Perhaps that is why God chose him to exemplify extending salvation to the gentiles. It also drives home the point I have been making. You CANNOT continue in sexual sin if you expect to go forward in relationship with Christ. Cornelius validated that quite to the contrary of the false teaching of Diana Holbert.

    Great point Peter said “Lord I have never eaten anything unclean” but this socalled “new revelation has been always been rejected by God.

    What is her point exactly, that homosexuality is not a sin or that God accepts them even though it is a sin?

    I hear people say “I am a gay christian”, can one then be a murderer christian, etc?

    I may be a Christian that struggles in an Area but to claim the sin to myself is speaking death.

    If we truly are saved God does not see us as we were prior to our conversion and will no doubt empower us in our struggle with our flesh, we also need eachother.

    To continue in sin, claim it and not fight is madness and such as persons salvation is very questionable.

  25. One more thing, what is up with this “the bible doesnt say the word homosexual”? any time someone says that you know they are denying the facts!

    If I say there is an Animal that we should stop eating though it is very tasty. This animal has a comb, somethings hanging under its beak called wattles, the male has spurs and crows, this animal also has two wings and two legs. Its tastes very nice when you fry it, bake it, stew it oh and it is sold a lot at popeyes (Cajun style). The females lay eggs that most people enjoy for breakfast or even lunch, fried, boiled, poached or scrambled. wouldnt you know what I was talking about though I didnt use the word CHICKEN!

    The word homosexual may not be in the bible but the act of homosexuality is, so if we read Romans 1 where is states people being sexual with those of the same sex there is no doubt that due to the today language and words we use we would say, “oh he is talking about homosexuality”

    UNBELIEVABLE!

Like I said she had the nerve to call the other Pastor “anti=intellectual” and yet her entire thesis flies in the face of common sense not to meant intellectual discovery. Although she should know intellectualism alone is not the way to rightly divide the Word.

    If people really looked at this foolishness, they would laugh at how ridiculous it is. But what does that say about the fact that many denominations are accepting this false teaching as credible? Strong delusion?
