Gay church ordains registered sex offender

A gay church in Louisville, Ky appears to have accomplished a dubious first…even for a gay church.  The City of Refuge Worship Center ordained Mark Hourigan who in 1998 sodomized an 11 year old boy and served prison time. Following his release, he had to register as a lifetime sex offender.

The story was covered by WHAS TV. You can see the video here. The reporter said there was no law in Kentucky barring a sex offender from becoming a minister as long as he complies with the rules of the church granting his/her credentials. That’s scary and shocking. This man, if released could do the same thing.

There are so many things wrong with this, I really don’t know where to begin.

Perhaps we can just detox the entire bizarre affair with a few questions.

1.  Should a registered sex offender ever qualified to be ordained? Any bible to support your yes or no?

2. Should the law be changed to prohibit registered sex offenders from receiving church credentials?

Keep in mind this is a gay church to begin with so it really is a convoluted mess. Its interesting how the pastor legitimizes the idea that the man can be a reformed child sex convict, but they reject any notion of a person being delivered from homosexuality.

  1. NAMBLA hides in the shadows of gay political activists so why shouldn’t they make their move in the Church?

Of course it is the enemies plan to put the most degenerate individual as the music leader because of the spiritual power of music….

    Don’t know what a NAMBLA is? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAMBLA

    Lord return quickly!

  2. Its interesting how the pastor legitimizes the idea that the man can be a reformed child sex convict, but they reject any notion of a person being delivered from homosexuality.

Quite ironic indeed. NAMBLA is a troubling institution. Imagine that gay marriage become a national law. The NAMBLA will come in in full force to legitimize their perversion. People may disregard that as a slippery slope argument but think. If there is gay marriage, what will stop the these people from lowering the age of consent.

  3. I dont think the man in question is a member of NAMBLA, but Im certain any legitimization of pedophilia and pedastry helps them to inch further and further out of their closets. Its no big secret the gay movement is nothing more than a template for pedophile tolerance and acceptance.

  4. It’s always a scarry thing when the “law” is invited to regulate anything church wise and the proceedure of ordination is something that the state should steer away from, however the church should be held more accountable for who it ordains and commissions. I think the responsibility should fall on them for future crimes…

In this gay, if we have a “gay church” then they’re not biblically centered to begin with and this is problematic.

  5. After viewing the Nambla link Robert provided, it’s just sickening that this group even exists. Even their Nambla symbol subliminally suggest grown men “sodomizing” young boys (see how the capital “M” is right next to and “touching” the small “b”)

Looks like the “M” is sodomizing the “b”. I don’t know why I saw that, but I did and I’m just sick in my spirit. I know this post wasn’t about Nambla, but I can assure you that this registered sex offender that this church ordained would have probably considered membership in Nambla at one point in his life.

I pray that every child in that church would be shielded from this man and “hopefully” he has repented and turned from this heinous sin never to commit it again!

  6. Pastor Burnett, I will agree with you on that. The state shouldnt regulate religious practice, but if they leave it up to the church and (with its fairly sorry record of dealing with sexual issues) something else happens, wouldnt the state have to then punish the church in some way? And how could they do that?

  7. 1. The “gay church” is spiritually blind, they are incapable, dead, and without God. They can “ordain” a scarecrow as far as I care, God does not know them.

    2. I don’t want the state in any church business – the state law should keep any convicted child molestor away from any child – period; whether at Burger King or the “Dead People’s Worship Center” makes no difference.

I think you nailed the heart of this story here: “Its interesting how the pastor legitimizes the idea that the man can be a reformed child sex convict, but they reject any notion of a person being delivered from homosexuality.”

in other words – blind, incapapble, and dead!

  8. Well this comes as no surprise due to the fact that homosexuality and pedophilia have walked hand in hand historically. The way things are looking will soon be hearing more and more how pedophilers need their rights because they were born that way too! Jesus is coming soon we are definitely in the last of last days…

  9. When the bible talks about the qualifications of a pastor, deacon, and other church leadership He set the standard for what would be acceptable. God will completely deliver a sinner from their sins, but I also believe the Holy Ghost is a lot of common sense, and this man doesn’t need to have a license/credentials to talk to people, other pedophiles about salvation and his conversion experience.
I also think the law should be changed and churches should set in their by-laws some tougher parameters. I know a lot of EX crackhead, drug dealing, pimping preachers might argue against it, but we are living in an evil day.

  10. Thats well said athenanike. I wanted to ask you if this is a “keys to the kingdom” issue in a broader sense? For instance while we should not bar any person legitimately seeking Christ, deliverance, fellowship et al, we do have a responsibility to ensure the sanctity of God’s house. What do you think?

  11. Like my Pastor says “All are welcome in our house until you make yourself unwelcome.” Churches are private property.
I didn’t mean to come across saying this guy is a member of NAMBLA (which it could be interpreted as such) my apologies Pastor Foster, Mark is not a member of NAMBLA as far as we know.

  12. 1 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
    Qualifications of Deacons

8 Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.(1 Timothy 3)

This man is clearly not qualified. The church is also apostate. I fear for any child that enters that building. 😦

I also feel that this man should of been locked up for life.

I agree all the perversions will become acceptable, the short terms for punishment, the lowering age of consent, the sexting teens do…this is coming. 😦

  13. Yes, Elder Foster we do.
For example, there are a couple of older ministers 50-60s at my local church who have been ministers FOREVER because of womanizing, marriages, kid out of wedlock, coming in/out of the state/jurisdiction/denom when they get mad about still not being ordained or child support find them. There are a lot of elders that probably got the same sordid history BUT were eventually ordained, but these men’s temperments and the way they’ve chosen to handle things further show they are not ready to wear the mantle of an elder.
I told my kin in a convo: see this is why God said way back in the old testiment the messiah would be born of a virgin, go ahead and set the qualifications so there is no misappropriations. Not that God can’t use anybody, but so as not to bring reproach to the name and ministry of Jesus, cause life was going to be hard enough without people talking about your mama.
As Christian said, Hourigan is being ordained in an apostate church, so we know they are not studying his temperment or how he continues to handle temptation, because temptation is in the next room on Sunday mornings. But also people do not forget, thats why we confess our sins to God, because some stuff will turn people off. “I would go to church, but the preacher over there is on the sex offender registry.” We can’t be a stumbling block in the way of the weak, as Paul taught.
God spelled out those stipulations for the early church for a good reason. That a man who sought leadership in the church would have balance in their life, a wife to have a close intimate relationship with and children to admire him. And his family is the point of reference for those considering him for leadership capacity. I mean if we have problems with married leaders raping, seducing, molesting, stealing, lying, etc…I think we are going to see an issue with these young single elders like in the catholic church.

  14. Ministers should be called by God; like John the Baptist. Men can ordain men all day, makes them no more called. A true sign of men called by God: Christ is increased and they are decreased. If that is happening inside and/or outside the church walls, God’s will is being done no matter one’s past.

  15. This thread is a sad indictment and commentary on “Christianity.” I hear no love or compassion or anything Christ-like….only judgement. Your arguments against this man are persuasive, logical and practical but are you so blind that you cannot see the damage you do to the reputation of the Church, God and the blood of Jesus? Christians love to talk about witnessing and salvation for the lost and the transforming power of the blood of Christ. Sounds to me that no one here really believes in any of that crap. Your words cry out to me: God is dead. God cannot change a man’s heart to be used in his kingdom work. (even though God was able to do exactly that with Saul/Paul, a former murderer and king David, an adulterer and murderer and countless other cases of the scum of society). Thanks to you all for reaffirming to me that Christians are the most hateful, hypocritcal, and judgemental group around; modern-day Pharisees. What incentive have you given to a lost, sinful dying world to come to Christ? NONE! If God can’t change and use this pedofile, I guess he can’t transform an adulterer, murderer, alcoholic, drug abuser, liar, etc. either. Screw that….
Seriously, you guys need to wake up and smell the coffee. Or do you not have eyes to see, ears to hear…..are your hearts so hardend by dogma and tradition that you can no longer discern the truth….? Yep, thought so.

  16. Viers: “If God can’t change and use this pedofile, I guess he can’t transform an adulterer, murderer, alcoholic, drug abuser, liar, etc. either.”

Is there a reason you left homosexuals off your list of people who can be changed, transformed and used by God? That’s what 1 Cor 6:9-11 says. So your sentence should read like this: If God can’t change and use this pedofile [sic], I guess he can’t transform an adulterer, homosexual, murderer, alcoholic, drug abuser, liar, etc. either.

  17. Boy you can’t get anything past GCMWatch lol.

If this convicted sex offender wants to truly get delivered and made into a new creature why did he join a Church were the Holy Spirit will not go because of their sexual immorality?

  18. You can’t be born again, as Robert points out, and find yourself in step and agreement with an apostate church. You will know them by their fruit.

It appears Ron Viers’ god is only interested in those things the culture has deemed sinful, not the one True God, creator of heaven and earth who has spoken rather clearly on the subject. His leaving out homosexuality is just more proof that the acceptence of sexual immorality of all kinds is more dangerous than most sins.

  19. Getting to maters that mater is something we seem to be able to get down to humbly; I would like to share this with you. This from my life experience is a true connection to the ties of races through our own sex laws which have been built on misconceptions and myth.

The Supreme Court just ruled on sex offender laws where some factions of our government think by some inert reasoning that sex offender should be quarantined like some virus steaming from draconian/Islamic law sex offenders should be executed.

The truth about the sex offender registry will come out soon enough. When it does, People will see how the use of the registry was created, and by exactly who and why and the devastation it has created and the worthlessness of the use of it. It’s origin in the Crow laws that brought disgrace to our nation allowing thieves and murderous societal bigots who have trashed any shot at making good of a program in its design to make money destroying our nation and its people. We can not play god and we can not survive using this behavior model because we are compounding the problem.

It’s a ruse designed by people who are getting rich off the castration/hysterectomy/health care/physic care of people through sex laws that have gone wild. What about the people who are being used by the Medicare programs that requires these mutilations for both men and woman after they take their means of support? Can’t you see? You have created the model and it is worthless! Why don’t you just indiscriminately kill people you don’t know that’s statically the next sex offender because over 90% of all new offences are people not on the sex offender registry and the numbers are increasing not decreasing so as a behavior model the chumps put together is really screwed up and they were told before they tried it. So what is the use of such laws as the sex offender registry other than to terrorize people? With the murder of so many sex offenders and the continued disregard for life by the use of the registry it’s just a mater of time before the federal government will be held liable for the deaths through federal court.

In a nation where a statement may have a double or triple meaning and our entire linage can be traced through mud, guts, and beer it’s nice once in a while to get the picture of what is meant instead of what some thinks someone may have implied. So it is from the trenches to the hill. Remember the game where someone says something in someone’s ear then passes it the same way to the next; the person advocating such destructive laws are the ones who need to be section 8 by simple brake down of the issue not sex offenders. Best regards
