GCM Watch praises AOG leader's decision to kill Covenant of Civility affiliation

Wood_George_100There’s new tactic evolving at the hands of false leaders to “bridge the gap” between dissenting groups in Christendom. Its called “covenant documents” and in short, they are trouble. The Christian Post reported that the leader of a prominent Pentecostal denomination has now removed his name and endorsement from the so-called Covenant for Civility which was a mosaic affirmation for gay rights. GCM Watch is applauding the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God for his bold and Godly actions.

Dr. George O. Wood, general superintendent of the Assemblies of God, asked that his name be removed from “A Covenant for Civility,” which was released in March.

“I do not want my name or the Assemblies of God to be associated with persons who claim to be in the Body of Christ yet reject the moral teachings of Scripture,” Wood told freelance writer and conservative Christian blogger John Lanagan.

He is exactly right. There should be no agreement whether it is civil or not with individuals who seek to subvert God’s moral mandates.  This document,  like the Manhattan Declaration and the abominable Affirmation Declaration should be denounced as incompatible with biblical moral truths. When the document was released in late March, biblical bloggers immediately sounded the alarm against it.

Christian apologist Ingrid Schuleter got right to the heart by noting that those who cry loudest for “civility” are the ones who are doing the most damage against the Lord’s church”

Christ’s atonement is mocked and rejected, the words of Jesus Christ trampled upon, a literal hell that our Savior warned about is scorned, Holy Scripture is twisted and distorted beyond all recognition, but Jim Wallis and Brian McLaren are out making statements of “Peace, peace!” when there is no peace. (Jeremiah 6:14) When the enemies of God blaspheme His holy name under the banner of a “new kind of Christianity”, they are declaring war, not peace.

When our Savior’s honor is at stake, when the integrity of the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ is at issue, there can never be peace and civility. Wolves are not civil creatures, even when they wear the disguise of sheep. They tear and rend and destroy when they go unchallenged. St. Paul in Acts, chapter 20 warned of these wolves. He does not mention civility.

The main problem with the Covenant for Civility is that it wants to drag the church into “dialogue” with the world to the detriment and abandonment of our Great Commission. And its originators cannot be discounted. The CFC was created by the Sojourners, an organization which believes that the church should support homosexual marriage and abortion. From their FAQ page:

“We can make sure that long-term gay and lesbian partnerships are afforded legitimate legal protections in a pluralistic society without changing our long-standing and deeply rooted concept of marriage as being between a man and a woman. That should continue to be the theology of the church and the way our society best orders itself.”  [source]

The Post said that the document was pitched to Wood with a great deal of disingenuousness. Some of the names who signed on in the beginning may not have been aware of who the Sojourners were or who they were about to yoke them in covenant.

Some of the signers include such prominent Christians as Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals; prolific author Max Lucado; Steven Haas, vice president of World Vision; Lynne Hybels of Willow Creek Community Church; Bishop Harry Jackson of the High Impact Leadership Coalition; and Jim Wallis who heads Sojourners.

When the statement on civility was distributed during a board meeting of the NAE hosted at the Assemblies of God headquarters in Springfield, Mo., Wood was under the impression that the document would be committed to “by fellow evangelicals.”

He said he was not aware of other signatories “that must have been added later.”

Those other signatories included emergent church apostate Brian McLaren , Lillian Daniel, a pro-gay cleric, Dr. Ken Brooker Langston, director of a religious organization which supported abortion rights and Tony Campolo, a emerging gay christian supporter.

Dr. Wood did well to remove his name from this document which misuses the Word of God to justify its own goals of false unity. For that we applaud him and strongly encourage of leaders to follow suit and likewise rescind their names and support from this ungodly covenant.

  1. I couldnt help but think why this person didnt remove his name and association from a simular type of document he signed. The AG leader saw that neither he nor his denomination should be partnered with ungodly people (claiming to be Christians) and publicly corrected his error. But this leader saw nothing wrong in covenanting with pagan and demon worshippers. And defended it tooth and nail.

I guess Godly leadership is hard to come by these days.

  2. Then Mr. Woods needs to go all the way then and stop endorsing people like the apostate Rick Warren who is doing everything he can to obscure and destroy the clear teachings of God’s Word and his waffling on Homosexuality!

Mr. Woods is a strong supporter of Purpose Driven teachings and has refused to remove Rick Warren influenced teaching materials from the AOG denomination, such as the We Build People program. Mr. Woods has also steadfastly refused to denounce any of Rick Warrens beliefs or teachings.

Going so far as to say that he believes many millions are coming to “christ” through Rick Warren and his teachings.

  3. John, youre right he should repudiate Rick Warren too.
But alas this issue deals with the Covenant of Civility and thankfully he did remove himself from that. That’s what the praise is for.

  4. You mentioned in the article that a Steven Haas vice president of World Vision signed the Covenant of Civility. I could not find such a person in the organization for North America.
