Black Gospel Music riding "new cart" apostasy

Black Gospel music has long been a draw to get people into the institutionalized church. Many people will come to a church to hear the choir sing before they will come to hear the preacher preach.  New competition shows like How Sweet the Sound are now elevating the spiritually nebulous choir to greater prominence as representatives of the black church, while sex and money scandals are diminishing the role of  the preacher.

GCM Watch has covered the rampant homosexuality entrenched in the Black Gospel music industry before here and  here .  However, you should be aware that industry workers are using the “new cart method” of traveling gospel music/comedy tours, gospel music artists appearing on late night talk-shows, and gospel music artists  partnering with ungodly secular artists allegedly to “reach the youth”.

What is new cart method? If you read 1 Chronicles 13 ,it tells how King David used a new cart to bring the ark of the covenant into Jerusalem,  following the pattern of the Philistines who used a new cart to transport the ark of the covenant. The Philistines didn’t know any better because they were unaware of the methods and restrictions of transporting the Ark which literally housed the presence of God.  As King, David should have known better, because Israel were covenant people.  The scripture records that as the ark was being moved it almost fell to the ground. But a man named Uzzah instinctively reached to steady it. When his hand touched it, he was killed instantly . Judgment was swift because King David didn’t seek the proper order of the Lord. Uzzah was the son of Abinadab where the ark of the covenant had been stored at his fathers house for years. He had been around the ark nearly all his life, however he was ignorant and didn’t understand that God required his commands to be followed to the letter. And in his zeal without knowledge it cost him his life.

Deadly mix: strange fire, gospel music and new carts

As reported by gcmwatch, you have Mary Mary toured with R&B artist Maxwell and made guest appearances on BET’s 106 and Park,  Kirk Franklin and Steve Harvey (yes the one with the profane mouth) are now together on a “gospel comedy tour”.  A slew of gospel music artists are now making foot kissing missions to the foul mouthed comedian Monique. Who are they?  Kirk Franklin Yolanda Adams, Marvin SappTye Tribbett , Deitrick Haddon, Vickie Winans, Bebe and Cece Winans, Shirely Caesar, David and Tamela Mann to name a few.

In the process of attempting to be relevant to the world, to make church hip and cool, the gospel music industry has put the glory of God on new carts to win the world’s acceptance. Instead of relying on the Holy Spirit to convict lost sinners in the world to repent and be saved, acceptance and false love seems to be the goal. Gospel music is a means to the end of achieving that acceptance.

Defending Mary Mary’s worldly partnerships, a person commenting on Facebook said, “the church needs more relevant music that would draw young people”. That’s a major error circulating with black gospel devotees. It elevates music/entertainment over Jesus Christ and over scripture as the guide for so-called evangelism. But didn’t Jesus say if “I be lifted up from the earth I will draw all men unto Him.” Church folk have lifted up their gospel idols more than Jesus Christ, and the results reflect that.  It has produced a spiritually shallow,  carnal minded Christians.  The new cart method creates opposition to Five-Fold ministry which is the proper order of the Church to equip and edify the saints. Utimately, God’s gifts are to bring the body of Christ to maturity so that we’re not tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine. Music does have a place in the church, but it was not intended to  usurp the authority of Jesus Christ and his governmental gifts.

The proper order of music ministry

After the mess the gospel music industry has caused with its illegitimate “ministry”, concerned music ministers should seek to right the cart using God’s proper order within the Church.

1. Singers should sing unto the Lord, and should praise Him in the beauty of holiness(2 Chromicles 20:21). They should be separated from the world unto God. Both singers and musicians should have an inward disposition of reverence and purity, and resists all that offends the holy nature of God(1 Chronicles 16:29).

2. Songs sung in the House of God should be unto the Lord, and not for entertainment purposes to entertain the flesh and people(1 Chronicles 25:7). Songs that are sung should glorify God.

3.  True minstrels/musicians help set spiritual atmosphere for the supernatural which does not include thrill seeking song that appeal to the flesh (2 Kings 3:15).

4. Singing and the use of musical instruments being sung and played unto the Lord should be used for spiritual warfare (2 Chronicles 20:20-24; 1 Samuel 16:23).

5. The church should only accept  songs and music which are —like scripture— inspired by the  Holy Spirit ( Ephesians 5:19 ; 1 Chronicles 25:1-6).

6.  A difference between holy and unholy should always be the standard in music. Gospel music artist who claim to love God, should not partner with those who promote ungodliness, sexual immorality and use gratuitous profanity. (1 John 2:15-16 ; 2 Chronicles 19:2).

7.  The cult of celebrity should be destroyed as quickly as possible at its roots. True singers and musicians of God reflect Jesus and serve people, instead of  demanding service and accolades. (Mark 10:45).

8. Use singing and music to lead people into true sacrifice unto the Lord( Hebrews 13:15).

Pastors, leaders, church singers, and church musicians must repent from the new cart method, sanctify and follow the order of the Lord . To avoid God’s  judgment, HIS church must return to holy living.  Its a disgrace to our Lord to lead people into entertainment based false worship of people and gifts. Jesus wants back into your church. Now.

  1. All I can say is AMEN!!!

What a wonderful reminder to me as a musician that as long as I am submitted to God’s Holy Spirit God is pleased!

I am always amazed that the “fly” in the apothecary’s ointment, which putrefies the ointment, being lauded as the anointing! So many no longer have discernment that everything is ok.

Thank you for such a very sobering look at the “industry” that is NOT about the Gospel at all!

  2. Thank you for this informative post. I used to listen to gospel radio seven days a week, 24 hours a day. But I am afraid to tune into gospel radio or even listen to gospel music now. Everybody is sampling secular artists and putting it their music and it is just a mess. I always love listening to the old school music because I know those individuals walked in true integrity. We should be different from the world and we have enough talent in our churches to prevent people like Mary Mary from going to secular producers, voice coaches, etc. The way back is servanthood and holy living. I love your guidelines for music ministry, I was fortunate to have a music director that taught us to sing anthems and not this stuff that call itself “gospel music.” Even my church’s gospel choir sings Godly selections and not just what is “hot” at the time.

  3. Film Industry, Music Industry, Motor Vehicle Industry, Fashion Industry,
…..businesses geared to earn major bucks in profits. The Gospel Music Industry is no different…’s all about the money. You can’t earn royalty from singing the good old hymns……..

  4. Surely the scandals will start to pop up in the gospel music industry. The rampant homosexual activity is alive and well. You can’t stand that close to fire without being burn.

  5. Spot on Shofarsound! You basically outlined what the ministry of the Levi is and what it is not. My home church invites some of these aforementioned gospel music “stars” to perform in the drama productions and now those productions have turned from ministry to entertainment and carry a Broadway ticket price tag for performances. Thank you for bringing clear perspective as to what God’s expectations are in the ministry of music. Good article!

  6. @ Andre,
they won’t be scandals…they’ll just be proof of what most people chose to overlook in the first place. Yeah, I’m still trying to figure out this Steve Harvey kick most of the Gospel industry is jackin’ right now. It literally baffles me.

  7. Great article! I listen to “ole school” gospel and praise & worship. Most of the newer music reminds me of being in the club; and some churches even turn down the lights so that one “can” experience the alleged anointed music. Come quickly Lord Jesus~

  8. well said, please consider what the bible says to us in 1John 5:17 all unrighteousness is sin…. Jemeriah 14:10 thus saith the Lord unto this people thus have they loved to sander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the Lord doth not accept them, he will now remember their iniquity and visit their sins. 2 Th. 2:12 that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

  9. Is the sound Gospel or is the words sang by these artist the ” GOOD NEWS” my GOD cannot and will not be enclosed in a box.

  10. But did Jesus said that to go into the world and preach the gospel? Do you want these artists to be segrerated in their own little box, which is the church instead of sharing with those who need to hear the word?

  11. So Gayle, define “the gospel”. After your definition we will see if it holds true and whether or not these gospel music industry is spreading “the gospel”.

    And a question for you:
is singing and preaching the same thing?

  12. @ Gayle, the Word says in 1 Corinthians 1:21, “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” So God uses preaching and teaching to save them that believe, and not singing, which the article brings out the point how much “out of order” the church has gone by pushing singing in place of preaching and teaching.

Secondly, you talk about attempting to keep these artist in a box. The last gospel artist that came out of the box was Tonex with his CD titled “Out of the Box” , he soon came out of the closet of being a homosexual, inclusionist, and now goes by the name B. Slade.

How many of these artist through song have led people to the Lord and they stayed in church?

How many of these artist sung so that demons flee from a service or person?

The fact of the matter Jesus nor Paul travel with a with a quote on quote Psalmist in there ministry to win the lost(they preached & taught, and disciple). Show me one scripture reference of somene being won to Christ by songs? And how many of these gospel artist base there songs on the scriptures?

Please take out the time to read the article over again, to realize the correct biblical order of singing and not from your worldview.

  13. This is an excellent article, very thorough and leaves detractors with nothing but opinions.

You just know that Articles like this will give people many issues and I believe that is because man has taken a place in the heart of a believers that they shouldnt have.

I would say that people look up to people that are so called famous way too much, so that when you say something they are hurt. Our feelings though is not what is the point of the matter. What the focus is is are what these singers doing right and in line with scripture.

So we shouldnt put God in a box and they are “singing” the gospel so does that mean that we can do anything we like?

Should I therefore do “Gospel” songs with a foul mouthed rapper in order to sing the gospel. What about an adulterer, a porn actor/actress, what about a known drug dealer? Seriously, if all that matterx is preaching the gospel then its no hold barred, even if what we do goes against another part of scripture.

Gayle, no one is stopping these artists from preaching the gospel however when was the last time you saw one of these artists on a secular TV show preach the gospel? that is that Christ is the ONLY way to the Father, He died for the forgiveness of our sins, was raised in three days that we may have life eternal and unless people believe that they are hellbound. As a matter of fact do they even sing songs that have that message on sed TV shows?

Too much idolatry in the Church!

  14. Pastor Foster, a question for you: Is it the SOUND of the music of these artists or the conduct and associations that they keep (or both) that you have issue with? Just curious. I hear you and agree. I just wonder what your thought are on how Gospel music is beginning to sound.

  15. Well said Paul N. I couldn’t have phrased it better. Yes it is to much idolatry in the Church. People in the “church world” worship the creation more than the Creator(Romans 1:25).

Look at Azusa Street Revival it was started based on a sincere hunger for God and the moving of the Holy Spirit. It wasn’t based on entertainment and gimmicks. Just pure hunger and thrist for righteousness.

  16. We are being DROWNED with gimmicks! I am SICK TO DEATH of church gimmicks and tricks. If you trick em to get em in, you will have to keep up the tricks to keep em in.

The preaching of the gospel is not a gimmick but the power of God unto salvation. The gimmicks being used will only produce false converts who will bastardize the church instead producing true sons of God.

  17. Tim, I dont necessarily have a problem with the “sound” overall. I mean its an American genre of music that has experienced like other genres fusion with other forms keeping it perpetual hybrid motion.

My fundamental problem is two fold. The lifestyles of the people who populate the industry, the associations, the silence of those who support them and the shallow religiousity of their music.

Although its called gospel music it doesnt represent the gospel.

  18. @gcmwatch Thanks for the response. I owe shofarsound an apology. I didn’t look at the author of the article and just assumed. I apologize sincerely. I asked the question because I know that many people say that a lot of current Gospel music sounds too much like the world and I’ve been on the line with that feeling for a time now. I believe that music in service can be a powerful ally to the preacher. It can “set the atmosphere” as we so often say. It can touch a person’s soul to the point where they can open up more to be ready to receive the man or woman of God who will preach or teach. It can encourage and strengthen faith. And it can draw people if it’s lifting Jesus. HONESTLY lifting Jesus and not a specific church or Pastor or material blessing or some other foolishness. But music can’t teach righteousness. And it can’t explain the mysteries of the Gospel of Christ. That would be one LONG song. I’ve met an artist recently who was on fire for making music for the Kingdom. He is a nice young man. However, when he fell in with other up and coming artists he began to ignore those that first encouraged him to go forward. He began to talk like they did and he only ran in their circles. He was becoming like the current artists that we now see who will sing anything, anywhere just to promote their name so that they can get famous and I suppose, THEN start lifting Jesus. But it seldom happens that way. Now, he’s in the studio with Jermaine Dupree working on some songs. It’s a cycle that breeds more and more after the same kind. Lovers of self. The sad thing is, many that I see believe that they are benefitting the kingdom by being this way. Cocky, arrogant, outrageous, unruly, double-minded and fake. And that’s the kind of faith that is presented in their music leading droves to hell, for broad is the path to destruction.

  19. @GCM AMEN!!!!!!!
    The Bible says in 1Corinthians:

1Co 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
1Co 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
1Co 1:19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

Notice Verse 18; The PREACHING of the cross is the Power of God! Gimmicks, tricks, and secular ways are killing the people. When you stop preaching the Gospel, then you end up with these “flesh shows”.

The sound of the music does begin to suffer as well. I believe that a song that reminds me of my Pre-salvation days is suspect to say the least. I have heard songs( just the music), and my spirit has been turned off to it. So I believe that when you have unclean vessels (those who are living in sin and NOT repenting) making music, you will end up with some music that is inspired by Satan parading as if it were of God.

I could give some examples of songs, but I think that everyone has to seek the Lord in this area for themselves. He will show you what offends Him.

These “Entertainers” no longer seek the will of God, but the will of the masses with the money. Bottom line!

This is still one of the best articles on the subject that I have read to date. I am sending as many people as I can to read this.

  20. This is a great article. It clearly defines the problem and diagoses the sickness with the current “Gospel Music Industry”. I love the “New Cart” metaphor. It paints a clear and disturbing picture of what is going on with this very important issue. I also like the fact that it gives very sound recommendations for what to do about the issue.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

  21. Yes Shofarsound, we have to get back to Christ. Anything else and what we are doing is trying to exat tactics over the Power of the Gospel and the Drawing power and conviction of the Holy Spirit and as you say doing things that God didnt tell us to do!

  22. there’s definitely truth to that Crossjourney. I think the vessel does matter. David played with such anointing evil spirits came out of Saul. But we know satan cannot cast out satan so if those who are conduits of “gospel music” are in an unrepentant state how can they possibly be releasing anything beneficial to the Body. And the flip side would be if they are unclean, wouldnt their music be unclean too?

  23. Years ago, many pastors would knowingly permit homosexuals to play the organ and Baby Grand pianos in the church. Nothing was said of it because it was the norm. Fast forward to today and it is worse. It is also now the norm for music ministers to be married and be bisexual. Pastors that cannot do without sin in the church just to have great music to attract people have already made a decision to kick Jesus out of the church. You know, the Jesus that died for our sins. Pastors need to be courageous and tell every music minister that if they are going to play, they must be holy. At the same time, we must look at them and realize that they need to be ministered to. Many pastors don’t even realize that their musicians are crying out for true intimacy with God. They are so caught up in serving that they don’t know how to receive. Then there are those music ministers and singers that delve into porn and have adulterous affairs with people in the choir. Nothing new, but it still goes on to this day. When we get serious about this, perhaps we will see the Lord come back to the house He shed His blood for. Until then, Isaiah chapter one still stands, even for the NT church. “Away from Me with your worship!” Lips or heart? Which one are you giving to the Lord?

  24. “And the flip side would be if they are unclean, wouldnt their music be unclean too?”

That word helped me to settle the issue.

I struggled with that for a season. Whatever they sing, the root is revealed.

Then I began to realize that if the vessel is tainted, what is produced has a root. Jesus mentioned that a tree is known by its fruit. It will either yield good fruit or bad fruit based from the root. Then in John 15, Jesus mentions the connection. If you are a branch connected to the Vine, you will produce much fruit. If you are not producing fruit, you will be cut off. I believe we are about to see many people that we think is connected to the Vine get cut off by the VInedresser (The Father).

  25. One more thing, I was on FB a while back and after the death of Marvin Sapp’s wife, he returned to singing and made mention that he wanted to see his sorority brothers and sisters. That puzzled me for a moment. There can be no connections to the world (secret societies) and with the Lord Jesus (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). What happened to his wife is not the issue. What I am saying is that if there is worldly connections. Any connections that are of the world, then you cannot be a disciple of Jesus (see Matthew 10:34-39, Luke 14:26-35).

  26. @Pastor Fred interesting you said Marvin Sapp mention his frat brothers and sorority sisters, which fraternities and sororities are secret societies. Both frats and sororities are gates to freemasonary.

Bottomline the church needs to flee Babylon so we won’t partake in Babylons plagues that are soon to come, the coming judgement(Jeremiah 51:6 ; Revelation 18:4).

  27. Thanks Brdavision. Congrats on the birth of your daughter. Also I have been reading your blog, some good stuff.

For those who don’t know the test & trials, and the attacks you been under Brdavision please checkout his story on his blog touch ya neighbor:

Keep the faith my brother! G-d bless you & your family!

  28. Great article. Truly the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ must recover Godly musicianship played (not) performed by Godly musicians. True, Holy . and God honoring music will move the heart of God, and in this hour of darkness, the true presence of God in our fellowships desperately needed.

I am reminded of the anguished cry of Moses in Exodus 33:15,16 “If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? IN THIS WAY, WE SHALL BE DISTINCT, I AND YOUR PEOPLE, FROM EVERY PEOPLE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH,”

The two key issues with the music in the church are, one how desperate are we to experience the Glorious and Holy Presence of our wonderful God and are we willing to be a distinctive people in the world?

Will adopting the world’s ways and musical styles create real disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ? Has it? It is not the numbers but the fruit that reveals how affect our methods are.

  29. Thanks Pastor Simmons for your comment and also being one of the people that imparted into life and ministry. Your man of integrity and excellent student of the Word of God.

Hopefully the Lord raise up some singers and musicians that haven’t bow down to “Baal.”

  30. @Tim apology accept. No I didn’t take it personal you thought Gcmwatch wrote this article, as long as you got the message is my main concern. Gcmwatch, Brdavision, Cgregory were four separate authors of this blog, but “one voice” and “one common goal” to help equip the saints in these last and evil days.

    G-d bless,

  31. I almost jumped out of my seat and shouted. Finally someone is speaking on this spirit of compromise at all costs. This is so relevant and I appreciate this work.

  32. Hey thank you sir for the link! I haven’t been able to get on this at work due to a browser problem but they got it fixed and I’m back. And somebody is in trouble…..

    Just kidding…..

    Thanks for the congrats!

May God continue to bless and keep you bro!

  33. And it’s not that they need to do much that sounds like or is like someone else’s. It can be original, like Kirk, but Kirk was played in the club. Music business is business and touring is touring but as black people we always seem to fine some kind of fault. I’d say to pray to see if we are right or wrong but even if we think we are right we still can be wrong. Even if you prove it with scripture, there’s still room for error. Business is business and if the have to give it to you then someone will pay. But everyone must admit, There is good and bad in everything….

  34. SO is that James Cleveland, old? God is in the older music? White music or black? What if it was in south korea? You would hate to hear them sing praises. It’s different…. that’s all, just different.

  35. Malachi, you say business is business but is that what God says? I dare say that that is the problem. Its about money and not always ministry. You said it, business is business that seems to me as if you are giving a free pass for any actions that may not glorify The LORD.

If there is good and bad in everything wouldnt it be logical that as believers we should try to get rid of what is bad? Why should we overlook it?

Kirk Franklin, himself said that he made a mistake in doing as song with unbelievers.

I just dont see why the gospel music industry is looked upon as such a big deal. As if they should never be challenged. Its as if they have become a demi god in the black Church and I hate it.

  36. Malachi you said: SO is that James Cleveland, old? God is in the older music? White music or black? What if it was in south korea? You would hate to hear them sing praises. It’s different…. that’s all, just different.

I’m attempting to make sense of your comment/opinion. Nowhere in the article does it mention old gospel music versus new gospel music( talked about the proper biblical order of music). What was mentioned is how these Black Gospel Music Artists have aligned themselves with the “World” instead winning lost souls. You mention James Cleveland in your comments, if you took out the time to read some of the articles on gcmwatch, you would find articles on James Cleveland was one of the “most profane perverted men” during his time singing gospel music. It is not so much old vs. new. But the mixing of the sacred and profane, and the lack of standard of holiness within the industry.

I have listen to Korean choir in church service before, and I might have not understand there language, but they sung to the glory of God and not entertain people. I’ve preached down in Jamaica, and listen to praise and worship team sing with a Caribbean flavor, and they sung unto the Lord(songs based on the scriptures) and you felt the power of God move in the service.

I Worked the prayer line at TBN about 10-11 years ago, my fellow prayer partners and myself use to hate to work prayer lines on Friday and Saturday nights. The reason being TBN at the time would play “profane” Christian Heavy Metal Music on those nights. Did this relevant Christian Heavy Metal music draw any of the young White people watching this stuff to pray to receive Jesus. The answer would be a resounding “No!” Most of the people would call on those nights cussing or mocking the name of Jesus, totally demonized. Whether it the singers are White, Black, Asian, Hispanic singing Christian Music it is all the same are the vessels singing living holy and the music they make does it line up with the Scriptures.

  37. Malachi, Is Black Gospel Music a business or ministry? How many are getting saved & delivered from the music? Can you have a mixture of good & bad in the Kingdom of God? Notice I didn’t mention a church. How is someone finding fault, as you stated what Black people do. If something doesn’t line up with the Word of God aren’t we suppose to base everything on the Word? If not we fall into secular humanism.

Your comment which you state in your own words,” Even if you prove it with scripture, there’s still room for error.” Is a contradiction of the Word of God, and proves my point of using “new cart” metaphor. Wasn’t King David in error when bringing up the Ark of the Covenant(the presence of God) to Jerusalem on a “new cart” like the heathen the Philistines? Wasn’t Uzzah a Levite killed for being in error by touching the ark? King David had to repent, and go back to the Word of God to find out how usher the presence of God into Jerusalem. God doesn’t wink at error or sin, people take for granted that His long suffering He is endorsing mess in the Church, judgement first starts in the household of faith, because saints out to know better than the sinner/heathen.

All facets of a Christian lifestyle should and always be biblical base, and not carnally based. I believe you missed the essential essences of this article by judging it merely on opinion/emotions instead of spiritually through the Word of God.

  38. “Did this relevant Christian Heavy Metal music draw any of the young White people watching this stuff to pray to receive Jesus. The answer would be a resounding “No!” Most of the people would call on those nights cussing or mocking the name of Jesus, totally demonized.”

    WOW, that blew me away!

  39. @Paul N, you made a very true point a couple of weeks ago about this very article. Which you stated, ” Leaves detractors with nothing but opinions. You just know that Articles like this will give people many issues and I believe that is because man has taken a place in the heart of a believers that they shouldnt have.”
